Chandler later on appreciated, “It was Dick exactly who took me so you’re able to Columbia and you can told everyone who would tune in, ‘This child should really be inside photos.’ You to government in the long run kinda offered him a glimpse which told you: ‘All proper you , we are going to put him in the your own personal.’ Which is how i involved play a gambler inside the a credit to experience series.” [ six ]
Critical lobby
Kine Each week told you “The newest sturdy ‘crooks fall out’ is actually peopled having a colorful assortment away from essential and you may arresting characters, and these, skilfully controlled of the publisher and you may manager, let the movie in order to tread water effortlessly. It is just for the end up this begins to break apart, but the slap-right up finale rescues they from the ‘red’. Ingeniously staged and you will intelligently dialogued, it’ll have no higher problem for the living down its extremely unsightly label.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Film Bulletin told you “The movie movements at the a fast rate, the fresh new dialogue was slick and characterisations essentially productive. Cock Powell and you will Evelyn Keyes direct the fresh new throw skillfully, since the investigator is used considerable aplomb by the that person identification, Lee J. Cobb.” [ 9 ]
Richard Brody on the The fresh Yorker listed “It terse and you will tight movie noir is centered on the intimate and you may professional issues of your own title character, the fresh criminal mastermind (played from the Dick Powell) behind a classy unlawful local casino. Brand new film’s journalist and you may movie director, Robert Rossen, sets up a good multidimensional chess online game, having mortal bet, anywhere between Johnny, their boss (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s spouse (Ellen Drew), a good cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and a good scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose sis (Nina Foch) spent some time working at the local casino and you can dated a beneficial corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The caustically epigrammatic script, the fresh new cast’s suavely managed body language out of love and possibility, and Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you may fashionably cocky photo (also his political conscience) make this pugnacious yet , in depth spectacle a low profile vintage of your own style.” [ 10 ]
Range gave the film kudos, writing, “That is a sensible whodunit, which have attention to scripting, casting and you may camerawork training it over the mediocre. Photo has action and you may suspense, and you may certain brief meets regarding jokes to provide style. Ace performances because of the Penis Powell, as the a betting family overseer, and you can Lee J. Cobb, because a police inspector, along with within the rating . Whilst the patch uses a common development, the characterizations is actually new and also the shows good enough to overbalance. Dialog is terse and you may relevant, preventing the emotional, phoney touching. Unusual digital camera bases come along once in a while in order to heighten desire and you will momentarily stop the interest. Strong teamplay by Robert Rossen, increasing once the manager-scripter, and you may Milton Holmes, brand spanking new publisher and you will representative manufacturer, including supports rendering it a silky manufacturing.” [ 11 ]
Motion picture critic Bosley Crowther provided the film a mixed feedback, criticizing they getting sluggish pacing, creating, “Although sluggishness and you may general dilemma of the area for a couple of-thirds of the motion picture does not make for popular adventure, and shallowness of your puzzle about who may have carrying out all new destroying relieves they of every great anticipation. Its generally a question of viewing Mr. Powell read their paces smartly when you find yourself a massive cast out-of actors and performers render him standard assistance. Evelyn Keyes takes on the favorable absolutely nothing lady exactly who brings out the newest finest in him and you can Ellen Drew is the easy and you can slinky vixen exactly who gets him into jams. Thomas Gomez was fatty as villain and you will Lee J. Cobb does a separate in a position trip once the a weary cops inspector which in the end shuts possible. A great deal of taking and you may smoking is completed of the all concerned.” [ twelve ]
Philp French, composing regarding the Observer told you: “This rarely found film noir is the cool, controlled directorial introduction of the kept-wing journalist exactly who went on and then make such classics as the All of the the latest King’s Men additionally the Hustler .” [ 13 ]
